Today’s Word

cucking-stool noun
Historical. A chair to which disorderly women were tied and then ducked into water or subjected to public ridicule as a punishment.
? origin Middle English: from obsolete cuck ?defecate?, of Scandinavian origin; so named because a stool containing a chamber pot was often used for the purpose.

That is definitely an obsolete word.

That is definitely an obsolete word.

I’m not so sure it should be obsolete. It would not be a bad punishment for gross displays of muffin top and plumber’s crack. And for manufacturers of spandex who make garments larger than a certain size. But then, I cheered on the Singapore government when that caned that little shit who scribbled paint on their walls.

    :p

I also have my doubts about the given etymology – it appears to contain the same root as the word cuckhold:

” “Cuckold” is derived from the Old French for the Cuckoo bird, “Cocu” with the pejorative suffix -ald. The earliest written use of the Middle English derivation, “cokewold” occurs in 1250.”

I did notice the similarity to cuckold.

This WotD came from the Oxford Dictionary of English… If only I had a copy of the OED. :)
