Why I Hate the Dominion Post (cont.)

The local news paper, referred to often as the Diminishing Pest, is most likely the worst paper in WV.

Why?

Yesterday, on the 45th anniversary of the March on Washington and of Martin Luther King Jr’s seminal “I Have a Dream” speech, Barak Obama was nominated as the first black presidential candidate for a major party in the history of the United State of America.

The top headline on the front page of the Dominion Post?

“Work to begin on WVU day care”

The next headline?

“Woman dies in single-car accident” (with a picture of the woman’s body being removed from the car.)

Any mention of this historical moment?

Nope.

What a bunch of Jim Wrights.

That is unbelievable. Maybe they’re Republicans?? I can’t even imagine any paper not running it as their top story. It was a momentous occasion, & I now christen the paper the Dead Post.

  2. Michelle Says:

Oh they’re definitely Republicans. The paper has aways had a horrible right wing slant, but this is just embarrassing.

I mean, it’s an HISTORICAL EVENT of MOMENTOUS IMPORTANCE and they ignore it because the guys a Democrat.

    Morons.

  3. Chris James Says:

The owner of Huntington’s “Herald-Dispatch” is mentioned in a lawsuit regarding Marshall football violations. Needless to say, that one is getting buried, too.

  4. Chris James Says:

Butt-covering follow-up: Note that he is not involved in the suit itself, but was allegedly the person who hired some players as janitors for $25 an hour a few years back, before he owned the paper.

  5. Michelle Says:

Oooh! I heard about the on WVPR! Any interesting tidbits?

  6. Steve Buchheit Says:

Gotta love those newspapers. Yeah, they all seem to miss the big picture, and while an attention to local news is admirable, completely missing historical moments just ain’t cool.

What a bunch of Jim Wrights.
Well, there goes another piece of gum.

  7. John the Scientist Says:

I was going to make a WV joke, but local news is the same everywhere.

    National headline:

    “Giant plane crash in Spain”

    Local News Headline:

“Man who possibly lived in this state 10 years ago among the victims!”

I think a prefrontal lobotomy is a prerequisite for employment as a local journalist.

  8. Jim Wright Says:

Yeah, try to imagine what the headlines here in Alaska are this morning. In 74 pitch, no less – which is usually reserved for declaration of war or statehood.

And Steve choked on his gum – I’ll probably get blamed for that too. What a bunch of judgmental Jim Wrights you all are.

Oops, is it okay to say Jim Wright in front of your grand mother, Michelle?

  9. Tom Says:

Maybe they could have used a headline like “White guy may still be next president.”

  10. Michelle Says:

    John,

It was really just the Diminishing Pest going out of their way to be horrific. The WVU paper had a nice headline and article, other state papers covered it.

They’re just completely and totally awful. Check out their website–unlike every other state paper, they have NO free content available online. None. Even individuals who get the paper at their house have to pay to read on-line.

    Tom,

As much as I hate them, I don’t think they’re racist. They just refuse to give free “publicity” to the Democrats.

And Jim, it’s okay to say “Jim Wright” in front of her until she meets you.

I’ve been thinking about last night all day, still on a high. I’ve also been thinking about your post since I read it. To realize there are people out there that don’t get what a huge, defining moment this was for our country is very disturbing. Whether you’re for him or not, if you’re a Dem or Rep, an anarchist, or don’t give a shit about politics, this was HUGE in the history of our country. It’s something I never thought I’d see this early in my life, if ever. I really didn’t think that a minority or woman would be a major political party Pres nominee anytime soon.
I kept hearing last night that it was the 45th anniversary of MLK’s life changing speech, & it’s amazing that the acceptance occurred on the same day.
I kept hearing it, but it didn’t hit me until I got home from work today that I turned 45 3 weeks ago. It hit me like a thunderbolt that we went from MLK giving one of the most incredible, impassioned speeches of all time, inspiring millions of people to fight segregation, to the nomination of the first black man as Pres in exact time that I have been alive. I don’t know think that I’m able to explain it in words that will make sense to you how strongly that affects me. It just feels really weird to know that it literally did happen in my lifetime, in the exact span of my life to this point.

Forgot to add, I haven’t checked, but this was such an historic event, I’m sure it was front page news on newspapers in many countries around the world. In volunteering w/ Obama’s campaign locally, we got emails from people from other countries often saying they wished they could help w/ the effort, & were avidly watching the primary results.

  13. kim Says:

Michelle, even my local paper had Obama on the front cover. It was just a photo, with a small blurb, but it did direct to the rest of the story in the front section.
