My dogs would always do that. In one house we had a very large floor grate that covered the gas furnace floor unit and our shepard knew just exactly how far she could recline over the grate without burning herself.
Herbie the Wonder Cat, when she still lived with Mrs. Dr. Phil’s Mom’s apartment, would stretch out in a semi-circle the absolute minimum distance to avoid auto-combustion from the really, really hot steam radiators. Herbie was very similar in appearance to your kitty, though she sometimes had a pack of smokes rolled up in a sleeve.

My cats tend to go face first into the vent instead of sideways. I don’t have the brightest cats in the world.

My parents had a cat (when they had an indoor cat) who would sleep under the wood stove when it was gong.
Kit must have tropical or desert heritage somewhere, because her coat is extremely thin, and she really doesn’t seem to like the cold at all.

Hey, the rotating banner just switched to the DC Mall Carosel by the Smithsonian that we discovered this summer! That was fun…heat & all.
