Instead, we spent several hours on Sunday with our niece, Maggie.

In May, it will have been two years since I broke my ankle. I have to say, that was one of the lousiest six week periods of my life: I broke my ankle, Michael’s Grandmother died, and Grandmom broke her femur. On the other hand, Jules and Lily were born during that period, so perhaps it wasn’t all horrible.
Last year, I adjusted my walking goal to try to get 8000 steps a day, and often didn’t make that. This year, I decided that I’d get back to aiming for a minimum of 10k steps five days a week, and try for more than that. Which I’ve been doing.

This past week, Michael and I started walking around the stadium area in the evenings, but I noticed that when going down hills, the bones in my ankle were occasionally grinding. So we rearranged our route to walk down the stairs and up the hill.

Last night as we were walking around town, I realized that the reason my ankle was grinding was because I was walking on the outside of my foot. Then I realized the reason I was walking on the outside of my foot was because walking normally was uncomfortable. Painful even.
Apparently my ankle isn’t 100% even now, so I’ll be cutting back on the steep hills, try to pay more attention to how I’m walking, and get off my damned feet at the end of the day.
Bah humbug.
Unbelievable how may flowers are blooming on March 18th.

I managed to get off a couple non-Jules pictures on Saturday. But I have to admit it was difficult.

Various things that struck my fancy as we wandered through DC.

March 22 was when daffodils first appeared last year, looks like the very end of March in 2009 (I don’t seem to have gotten the first daffodils every year in the past.)

We took a long weekend and spent two days wandering around the Washington DC Mall. Although it was cool, the weather was so lovely we spent almost all our time outside.
We so most of the major monuments, including the WWII Memorial and the MLK Jr Memorial, neither of which was on the Mall last time we visited.
The Washington Monument is visible from just about everywhere.

Hard to believe how many flowers were blooming in early March.

oops!

I’m going to be rather busy for the next several days, so I’m not sure I’m going to get to the scavenger hunt this week.

This week, I made butterscotch pudding. Except, I used bourbon instead of scotch, because bourbon is what I have in the house.
Butterscotch Pudding
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 cups whole milk
2 tablespoons cornstarch
8 egg yolks
pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon bourbon or scotch

Last week’s, but still, yummy.
Panna Cotta
2 1/2 tablespoons gelatin (I’m going to use less next time)
1 cup whole milk
3 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean
1/8 teaspoon salt

I’d feel bad about never having been to the WV Botanic Garden before, except it’s relatively new.

Yesterday, we had a high of 58F. Today, we’re calling for snow. Not really snow of course, just flurries.
But on a more serious note, my first daffodil pictures last year were March 22. Everything is blooming crazy early this year.

Yeah, I needed oreos. I know I haven’t made a new tasty Tuesday post in ages. But this is what you get.

As if I needed further proof this was an incredibly mild winter…
Last year’s crocus post was March 13th. And I discovered that not only did the rosemary survive the winter–so did the parsley.

It was another gorgeous Sunday. Only saw one other person with a camera, however.
While looking for items for the scavenger hunt, we came across a couple of these:

Yeah. Maybe repainting signs doesn’t work as well as they thought it would.

Found my items on our walk around town today.
Ten turned out to be more difficult than I had expected.

This is the scenery for part of the walk I made to and from school:

This is gonna be in a couple parts, because 1) I took a lot of pictures and 2) I have a lot of memories.
As I mentioned previously, every school I attended in Morgantown is gone, at least as a school. The first school I went to, Second Ward, is now an apartment complex (I have three pictures of it in my Flickr set) but the school for which I have the fondest memories was Second Ward Annex. It opened in 1939 as the Second Ward Negro school, but after desegregation, shifted to an annex to the main school.
I went to second and third grade there, and walked there and back every day.
This is the first view of the school, if you’re walking down White from Wilson (which I did).

Here is the second flight of steps up to the school.

Oddly, although I have a dinosaur on my desk at work, I forgot to take a picture of it.

Yeah, so now I am a week behind. Go figure.

Those are inside-y things, right?
Same place as we walked last week, only not as far. I know 24 F isn’t cold by some standards, but it was windy–especially along the river.
Mon river is just starting to freeze up, from where Decker’s Creek feeds into it. As warm as it’s been, I’m surprised there’s even this much ice.
