{"id":10410,"date":"2013-05-30T06:00:16","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T10:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/?p=10410"},"modified":"2013-05-31T19:00:53","modified_gmt":"2013-05-31T23:00:53","slug":"weekend-travels-spruce-knob-dolly-sods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/10410","title":{"rendered":"Weekend Travels: Spruce Knob &#038; Dolly Sods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since we made an actual weekend of our trip (staying overnight instead of just a day trip) we had our leisure to visit several of the parks and recreation areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/mnf\/recarea\/?recid=7053\">Spruce Knob<\/a> is West Virginia&#8217;s highest peak. We did not hike to the top, but instead drove (I believe it&#8217;s an 11 mile hike).<\/p>\n<p>Despite being the end of May, it was quite cold&#8211;there was even ice on the ground under the observation tower. But it was also gorgeous, and there were not many people, so one could actually get a sense of the isolation of the area.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nice to be in a mostly wild area, and not see or hear other humans.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/8859117771\/\" title=\"20130525_Spruce_Knob_014 by Random Michelle, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3820\/8859117771_77f5c8378a.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"20130525_Spruce_Knob_014\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/8859103075\/\" title=\"20130525_Spruce_Knob_064 by Random Michelle, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3796\/8859103075_e8d9fc888e.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"20130525_Spruce_Knob_064\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Mind you, it&#8217;s not quiet in these areas&#8211;nature isn&#8217;t particularly silent&#8211;just peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>Coming back down from Spruce Knob, we made the mistake of listening to the GPS, which kept wanting us to turn down roads marked &#8220;Private! No Trespassing!&#8221; or overgrown dirt roads.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, it was an absolutely gorgeous drive.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/8859120021\/\" title=\"20130525_Spruce_Knob_097 by Random Michelle, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2868\/8859120021_4bb7c79e5f.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"20130525_Spruce_Knob_097\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>We also took a short hike at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/mnf\/recarea\/?recid=12366\">Dolly Sods<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/8859077283\/\" title=\"20130526_Dolly_Sods_025 by Random Michelle, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2862\/8859077283_c6761ccab5.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"20130526_Dolly_Sods_025\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>We also saw many signs of Superstorm Sandy.
