If it was a re-read, I&#8217;m not listing it, not matter how good it was.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fantasy, straight-up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3571\"><i>Heaven\u2019s Net is Wide<\/i><\/a> (2007) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/hearn.php\">Lian Hearn<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 (10\/10)<\/p>\n<p>I really love this series, set in an historical, imaginary, Asian country. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/4087\"><i>River of Stars<\/i><\/a> (2013) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/kay.php\">Guy Gavriel Kay<\/a>\u00a0 (9\/10)<\/p>\n<p>He is always astounding, the amount of research he puts into creating a world and time that never actually existed, but is based upon one or more historical places. And this book has an absolutely gorgeous cover.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Supernatural Mystery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3612\"><i>Slashback<\/i><\/a> (2013) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/thurmanr.php\">Rob Thurman<\/a> (9\/10)<\/p>\n<p>I love Rob Thurman&#8217;s writing, and I adore the Cal Leandros series.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Grant \/ The Rivers of London<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3579\"><i>Midnight Riot<\/i><\/a> (2011) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/aaronovitch_ben.php\">Ben Aaronovitch<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3593\"><i>Moon Over Soho<\/i><\/a> (2011) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/aaronovitch_ben.php\">Ben Aaronovitch<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3657\"><i>Whispers Under Ground<\/i><\/a> (2012) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/aaronovitch_ben.php\">Ben Aaronovitch<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>Peter Grant is a London cop who can see things few other people can, so he&#8217;s transferred to the secret unit of the London force&#8211;a very very small unit that&#8217;s less elite than it is one the department is trying to forget.<\/p>\n<p>Occult Crimes Unit Investigation<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3923\"><i>Hard Spell<\/i><\/a>  (2011) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/gustainis_justin.php\">Justin Gustainis<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>Stan Markowski is a Detective on the Scranton Police Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit. This is the series I pointed out as having absolutely terrible covers. Luckily, the writing was better than the cover.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Supernatural<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/4163\"><i>Written In Red<\/i><\/a> (2013) Anne Bishop\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>Neurondoc got me this book, saying I&#8217;d really like it. She was right. I had quibbles, but they were only quibbles, and the story really was enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3928\"><i>Magic Rises<\/i><\/a> (2013) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/andrewsi.php\">Ilona Andrews<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>The Kate Daniels book for 2013 didn&#8217;t hold up in my memory as well as my initial impression upon reading. But I still pre-ordered the next book as soon as it appeared.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3630\"><i>Frost Burned<\/i><\/a> (2013) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/briggsp.php\">Patricia Briggs<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3535\"><i>Fair Game<\/i><\/a> (2012) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/briggsp.php\">Patricia Briggs<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>These books are set in the same world, but follow two different sets of characters. In general, I prefer the Mercy Thompson series to the Alpha and Omega series, but there were some amazing events in <em>Fair Game<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3765\"><i>Blood Trade<\/i><\/a> (2013) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/hunter_faith.php\">Faith Hunter<\/a>\u00a0 (8\/10)<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Steampunk \/ Victorian Magical<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3734\"><i>The Death of the Necromancer<\/i><\/a> (1998) Martha Wells\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>This is an older book, written before Steampunk \/ Victorian Magical became a thing, and I really enjoyed it.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Short Stories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3550\"><i>Companions to the Moon<\/i><\/a> (2007) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/delint.php\">Charles de Lint<\/a> (short story)\u00a0 (9\/10)<\/p>\n<p>I love pretty much everything I&#8217;ve ever read by Charles de Lint. That that under advisement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3547\"><i>In Sea-Salt Tears<\/i><\/a> (2012) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/mcguire_seanan.php\">Seanan McGuire<\/a> (short story)\u00a0 (8\/10)<\/p>\n<p>This was a free story available from the author&#8217;s website, and was a marvelous look The Luidaeg, who is a fascinating character.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the past year in reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fantasy, of various sub-genres.
