{"id":17144,"date":"2022-08-26T20:49:37","date_gmt":"2022-08-27T00:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/?p=17144"},"modified":"2022-11-02T20:39:20","modified_gmt":"2022-11-03T00:39:20","slug":"why-representation-in-books-is-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/17144","title":{"rendered":"Why Representation in Books Is Important"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things that has come recently is visibility in media\u2014being able to see one\u2019s ownself reflected in books and movies etc<\/p>\n<p>Some of people (especially those on the far right) seem to think this is ridiculous. Most of those people are normal white people (quite often male) whose life view is reflected in centuries of art and literature.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I have found it incredibly enlightening to read stories from others point of view. After all, I learn something about those who are not like me. (As someone who loves fantasy, and escaping to other worlds, this seems sensible.)<\/p>\n<p>But more importantly, in recent years I\u2019ve discovered things about <em>myself<\/em> I didn\u2019t know before. Things I might not have figured out\u2014or come to accept\u2014if I hadn\u2019t read stories about people with those traits. Because the people in these stories were people I like\u2014people I identified with, especially as the worked (and sometimes struggled) to exist in a world that others sailed through.<\/p>\n<p>It was always a relief it is to see characters in books struggling with the things I do. Yet it was still a shock to see people name those things\u2014names that I had not necessarily associated with myself.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, I want to point out some of the books and stories that helped me come to terms with who I am and who I have become, but also books that have helped me see things that I do not experience\u2014or at least don\u2019t experience in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>What I want to start with is mental health. Because mental health is <em>complicated<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>First off, there\u2019s shame.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yWvOue\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/reading\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Better-Than-People.jpg?resize=199%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Better Than People\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Simon didn\u2019t like this side of himself. The side that saw others\u2019 struggles\u2014 and how simply they could sometimes overcome them\u2014 and raged. His heart was beating hard, but fuck it, what were they here for if not this?<\/p>\n<p>Park looked at him. He had that same odd look on his face he\u2019d had when they first got to Jagger Valley that looked so much like nerves, but a little hopeful, too. \u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.
