It&#8217;s a mystery series, and there aren&#8217;t any magical elements&#8211;except for the fact all the characters are animals.<\/p>\n<p>If you changed the characters to humans you wouldn&#8217;t have to change about the story, aside from a few bits I found delightful.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Orville and Meade examined the tree. \u201cLook like teeth marks,\u201d Meade said. \u201cCould be muskrat or beaver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The beavers standing nearby huffed with offended pride. \u201cWe would never!\u201d one declared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, anyway, we\u2019ve got tools for that!\u201d another added, lifting a long saw the team had brought along.<\/p>\n<p>A third beaver said, \u201cYeah, we\u2019re not barbarians.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But many passages could stand as they are.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAh, but now you have the important phrase on the advice of counsel. That helps a lot. I\u2019ll write up a letter, too, for you to shove in Stone\u2019s face when he gets overeager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what if he gets so mad that he fires me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019d be a fool to do that,\u201d Mr. Fallow said promptly. \u201cEveryone knows you\u2019re one of his best reporters. But just in case, I\u2019ll add a paragraph explaining that it would be actionable if you were to lose your job as a result of your ethical stance. The guardrails completely fall away when he&#8217;s writing in a fantasy world, so be fully prepared for a romp.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A loud bang echoed through the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh.\u201d The Duke of Annadale rose. \u201cWe should go. It appears one of your friends has found my pistol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, yes.\u201d Casually, Miss Bickle indicated the baize-inlaid box that lay open just behind her. It still contained one unfired pistol. \u201cI found those under the bed and wondered whether they were loaded. It seems they were.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which is not to say there isn&#8217;t plenty of social commentary for our world.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am\u2014you must surely realise\u2014in a most compromising position and should any gentleman happen upon me in this state, I would be quite ruined.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then you should have had the foresight to be born richer or more male.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I mean.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And whereas in the enlightened twenty-first century the marriage of a British aristocrat to a Person of Colour is a wholly unremarkable thing that results in no hostility whatsoever, in the bad old days of the 1800s it caused quite a scandal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ratings: 9\/10<\/p>\n<p>Published by Del Rey<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/23157\"><em>Mortal Follies<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/24075\"><em>Confounding Oaths<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Uncanny Romance series by <a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/mcbride_lish.php\">Lish McBride<\/a><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/47uL5nc\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-right\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/reading\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/A-Little-Too-Familiar.jpg?resize=200%2C301&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A Little Too Familiar\" width=\"200\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Supernatural, Romance, Boinking<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is a supernatural romance, but like all of Lish McBride&#8217;s books, the world-building is the best part.<\/p>\n<p>Well, ok, also the dialog.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He cocked his head to the side. \u201cWhat does evening goth smell like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoffee, clove, and ennui.\u201d I picked up my bag. \u201cThe ennui is there in the morning, but it takes all day for the smell to really set in.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are not, however, cozy stories (aside from the boinking), as several of the characters have to deal with toxic families \/ relationships and other<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It was one of those moments where I was just so exhausted with myself.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I couldn\u2019t take turns being anyone else.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rating: 9\/10<\/p>\n<p>Self-Published<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/22646\"><em>A Little Too Familiar<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 8\/10, <a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/22686\"><em>Rough Around the Hedges<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/24072\"><em>The Masquerades of Spring<\/em><\/a> (2024) <a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/aaronovitch_ben.php\">Ben Aaronovitch<\/a><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4hYgg0Q\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-right\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/reading\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/The-Masquerades-of-Spring.jpg?resize=200%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Masquerades of Spring\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><em>Mystery, Historical, Queer, Novella<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This Rivers of London novella takes Nightingale across the ocean, and is written from the POV of the school mate with whom he is staying.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nightingale danced just the way I\u2019d expected him to, with grace and precision but with no sense that he was letting go or losing himself in the music.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s Prohibition NYC. It&#8217;s the 1920s jazz scene.
