{"id":19495,"date":"2026-01-01T21:50:45","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T02:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/?p=19495"},"modified":"2026-01-01T21:50:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T02:50:45","slug":"the-books-of-2025-romance-science-fiction-comics-non-fiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/19495","title":{"rendered":"The Books of 2025: Romance, Science Fiction, Comics &#038; Non-Fiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I may have read 26 romances this year, but only three of them were new to me books, and only one of those was more than meh.<\/p>\n<p>I never read much SF, I&#8217;m backlogged on comics (I really do need to pick up my new reading glasses), and I&#8217;m only reading a little non-fiction, so these genres get to share a single post.<\/p>\n<h3>Romance<\/h3>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/25572\"><em>After Hours at Dooryard Books<\/em><\/a> (2025) <a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/romance\/Sebastian_Cat.php\">Cat Sebastian<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/notreally\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/After-Hours-at-Dooryard-Books.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-right\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/notreally\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/After-Hours-at-Dooryard-Books.jpg?resize=200%2C320&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"After Hours at Dooryard Books\" width=\"200\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a>Coming as a surprise to no one who has read a Cat Sebastian book, this was excellent.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not light and fluffy as it deals with grief and homophobia and the Vietnam war.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI realize this is wildly hypocritical of me,\u201d Nathaniel says. \u201cBut even though I\u2019m very much against emotions when they happen to me, I think it\u2019s possible that refusing to feel anything at all fucks you up fairly comprehensively in the long run.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it is <em>good<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick is doing his best to pay back good into the world after one woman saved him when he was a teenager and had no where to turn. Nathaniel has spent his life pretending to be something he isn&#8217;t and ignoring the things going on around him until he can&#8217;t take it any more.<\/p>\n<p>Add to that grief, folk music, and a new baby and it still doesn&#8217;t tell you anything about how the book made me feel.<\/p>\n<p>9\/10<\/p>\n<p>Self-published<\/p>\n<p><em>Historical, Queer<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Graphic Novel<\/h3>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/24367\"><em>Lady Mechanika: The Devil in the Lake<\/em><\/a> (2025) Joe Ben\u00edtez, M. M.
