{"id":19883,"date":"2026-07-21T17:30:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T21:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/?p=19883"},"modified":"2026-07-21T18:18:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T22:18:00","slug":"alaska-trip-2026-part-the-second","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/19883","title":{"rendered":"Alaska 2026: Part the Second"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second port stop was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelalaska.com\/destinations\/cities-towns\/juneau\">Juneau<\/a>, which is the capital of Alaska, and also is accessible only by plane or boat. <\/p>\n<p>Juneau is the cruise stop for whale watching, which we of course did.<\/p>\n<p>Because we were visiting in June instead of July this time, we didn&#8217;t get to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/a8n28D\">humpback whales bubble feeding like we did in 2011<\/a>, but it was still an incredible privilege to see these amazing animals.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/55378765731\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_375\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378765731_f5128a708c_c.jpg?resize=800%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" alt=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_375\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/55378894063\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_387\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378894063_1c795ab8cc_c.jpg?resize=800%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" alt=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_387\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Jules and Michael got to see a humpback breaching from the cruise ship&#8211;I missed it.<\/p>\n<p>On the whale watching cruise we also got to see sea lions.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/55379163970\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_395\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55379163970_dd6bb166ef_c.jpg?resize=800%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_395\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It was good we didn&#8217;t have to do much beside stand around for the whale watching, because that morning we took a hike a Mendenhall Glacier.<\/p>\n<p>It was a <a href=\"https:\/\/stepintoalaska.com\/\">fantastic guided hike<\/a> and we had <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/eljosedavid?ltsid=fc9411e2-ce36-445d-9a68-ad0b09b9ac3b\">a marvelous guide<\/a> who was knowledgeable about the area and (importantly to me) the things we saw on our hike.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/55408033099\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"20260616_104143\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55408033099_26ddab1290_c.jpg?resize=800%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" alt=\"20260616_104143\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/55377833652\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_438\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55377833652_4e64309543_c.jpg?resize=533%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" alt=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_438\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We went partway up the West Glacier Trail, to get a view of Mendenhall Glacier. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/55378946169\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_336\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378946169_4c7a4a2117_c.jpg?resize=800%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" alt=\"2026-06-16_Alaska_Juneau_336\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mendenhall Glacier, however, made me a bit melancholy.
