{"id":271,"date":"2004-06-16T17:18:28","date_gmt":"2004-06-17T00:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/271"},"modified":"2004-06-16T17:18:28","modified_gmt":"2004-06-17T00:18:28","slug":"christian-splits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/271","title":{"rendered":"Christian Splits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The news that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A44658-2004Jun15.html?referrer=email\">Southern Baptists vote to leave alliance<\/a> doesn&#8217;t particularly upset me, as I&#8217;m not a Baptist, and I am disturbed by the ultra conservatism of the Southern Baptists. <\/p>\n<p>But it did lead me wonder about the splits in the Christian church.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly the Christian church was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlychristianwritings.com\/gnostics.html\">never<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/philtar.ucsm.ac.uk\/encyclopedia\/judaism\/messiah.html\">single<\/a>, unified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/shows\/religion\/first\/diversity.html\">group<\/a>, although following the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gospelcom.net\/chi\/DAILYF\/2001\/05\/daily-05-20-2001.shtml\">council<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/cu\/augustine\/arch\/sbrandt\/nicea.htm\">Nicea<\/a>, there was a small degree of unity until 1054, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gospelcom.net\/chi\/DAILYF\/2001\/07\/daily-07-06-2001.shtml\">split of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox church<\/a>. Following the Orthodox\/Catholic split, things were relatively calm until the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protestant_Reformation\">16th century and the Protestant Revolution<\/a>, after which such divisions became increasingly frequent, continuing today till we have almost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religioustolerance.org\/christ7.htm\">innumerable Christian sects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each sect has its own slightly different set of beliefs, and typically asserts that all those who belong to a different sect, with a slightly different set of beliefs, are going straight to hell, those damned papists\/heretics\/infidels. <\/p>\n<p>Is this really how Christianity was supposed to end up? Damning others for technical doctrinal positions?
