{"id":9897,"date":"2012-11-18T11:15:40","date_gmt":"2012-11-18T16:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/?p=9897"},"modified":"2012-11-18T15:41:24","modified_gmt":"2012-11-18T20:41:24","slug":"weekend-travels-harpers-ferry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/notreally\/archives\/9897","title":{"rendered":"Weekend Travels: Harpers Ferry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend we drove to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/hafe\/index.htm\">Harpers Ferry<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>For those of you not familiar with American History and\/or the Civil War, <a href=\"http:\/\/historicharpersferry.com\/\">Harpers Ferry<\/a> is where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvculture.org\/history\/jnobrown.html\">John Brown<\/a> seized the US Armory and Arsenal that was one of the events that brought the issue of slavery to, perhaps, a boil.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, other things happened in Harpers Ferry, and the Appalachian Trail cuts through Harpers Ferry.<\/p>\n<p>This is the building where John Brown and his group holed up. The ruins of St. John&#8217;s Episcopal Church particularly fascinated me, and I spent a lot of time wandering around them taking pictures. Enough pictures they&#8217;ll be a separate post.<\/p>\n<p>Arsenal ruins: the park has signs with a picture showing the archeological dig of the foundation. The ground level here is about three feet higher than when the building was built.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/random_michelle\/8196558346\/\" title=\"20121117_Harpers_Ferry_023 by Random Michelle, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8057\/8196558346_2990dab543.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" alt=\"20121117_Harpers_Ferry_023\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvculture.org\/history\/journal_wvh\/wvh54-1.html\">Virginius Island<\/a> is an abandoned area.
