A Christmas Dance (2014) Alissa Johnson

A Christmas Dance

It was a nightly ritual for them. Mrs. Meldrin would have her glass of warm milk, Mr. Meldrin his brandy and the two of them would sit before the fire and share a few quiet moments alone, discussing the events of the day.

Patience sometimes left her door open at night, just to hear the murmurs of their conversation. She couldn’t make out the words, but her purpose was not to eavesdrop, it was merely to hear the sound.

“You can’t be serious.” He gave her a pitying look. “A dinner party in two days?”

“I shall keep it small, no more than a dozen guests.” She tapped her chin again. “Maybe two dozen.”

“Your staff must abhor you.”

“You’re a beautiful woman, Patience.”

“I. . .” Flustered, she attempted to make light of the compliment. “Without my spectacles, you mean.”

With exquisite gentleness, he slid her spectacles back into place. “You’re a beautiful woman,” he repeated.
