One Corpse Too Many<\/a><\/em> (1979) Ellis Peters<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Set in England in 1138.<\/p>\n

There is war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud, over who is the rightful ruler of England, and Stephen has come to Shrewsbury to flush out some of Maud’s strongest supporters. <\/p>\n

After the battle, and the hanging of those seen as traitors to Stephen, Brother Cadfael finds an extra body, slipped in among the executed.<\/p>\n

Cadfael also finds himself with an assistant–a young man sent to the abbey by his aunt in an attempt to keep him safe–who is not at all what he appears to be.<\/p>\n

The mystery is good, but with all these stories the heart is brother Cadfael.<\/p>\n

I value devotion and fidelity, and doubt if it matters whether the object falls short. What you do and what you are is what matters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
