The Governess Game<\/a><\/em> (2018) Tessa Dare<\/a><\/p>\n

Alexandra Mountbatten has been struggling to make a living tending clocks, but a mishap sees her taking a position as governess to the wards of Chase Reynaud, one of the most notorious rakes in London.<\/p>\n

Her friends have opinions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter whether he recalled me or not. I\u2019ll be looking after his wards. I will scarcely see him.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you will see him,\u201d Penny said. \u201cEspecially if you go wandering about the house at night. Try the library first.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cLock yourself in your room,\u201d Nicola countered. \u201cI\u2019ll make you a deadbolt.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Chase never meant to become heir, and has no interest in keeping his line going. But he inherited two young girls when he became the heir, and he needs someone to educate them.<\/p>\n

The girls are the best part of the story, and how you quickly see that despite his reputation, Chase is truly a good guy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmighty Father,\u201d he began in a dispirited tone, \u201cwe commit to your keeping the soul of Millicent. Ashes to ashes. Sawdust to sawdust. She was a doll of few words and yet fewer autonomous movements, yet she will be remembered for the ever-present\u2014 some might say permanently painted\u2014 smile on her face. By the grace of our Redeemer, we know she will be resurrected, perhaps as soon as luncheon.\u201d He added under his breath, \u201cUnfortunately.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even if the girls try his patience abominably.<\/p>\n

Daisy gave him a sweet, innocent look. \u201cBut we don\u2019t have a governess at the moment.\u201d <\/p>\n

He groaned. \u201cDon\u2019t tell me the new one quit. I only hired her yesterday.\u201d <\/p>\n

Rosamund said proudly, \u201cWe were rid of her in seventeen and a quarter hours. A new record.\u201d <\/p>\n

Unbelievable. <\/p>\n

Chase strode to the world map on the wall and plucked a tack from the border. \u201cThere.\u201d He stabbed an unsuspecting country at random, then pointed at it with authority. <\/p>\n

\u201cI am sending you to boarding school there. Enjoy\u201d\u2014 he squinted at the map\u2014\u201c Malta.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The other thing that I LOVED was this bit that popped up out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

Take the manananggal<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMagana-what?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cManananggal<\/em>.\u201d Alex made her voice dark and mysterious. \u201cShe\u2019s a lady vampire who can cut herself in two. Her legs remain rooted in the ground like a tree stump, and the rest of her flies out into the night. Her intestines unwind like a string behind her, and she goes hunting for mothers and their children.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I love folklore.<\/p>\n

I also appreciate the bits that are slipped in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d He must have caught the tense note in her voice. \u201cTell me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was mostly just leering,\u201d she whispered. \u201cA pinch or two. You know, the usual.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe usual?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe usual for him. Chase, it was years ago.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Some things never change.<\/p>\n

As I said, the girls were the heart of the story. There was more boinking than I prefer, but I really liked that Alex wanted to be an astronomer and was the smarter of the two.<\/p>\n
