(A) big, burly, thrusting man, his face abruptly lit as he swung past the torch fixed at the gate, and then as abruptly darkened. A massive face, fleshy and yet hard, muscled like a wrestler\u2019s arms, handsome in a brutal fashion, the face of a man not in anger at this moment, but always ready to be angry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Worse, Hugh, I do not repent me! Do you suppose there is room within the bounds of grace for one who has set his hand to the plough, and every little while abandons his furrow to turn back among the sheep and lambs?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI think the sheep and lambs might think so,\u201d said Hugh, gravely smiling. \u201cHe would have their prayers. Even the black sheep and the grey, like some you\u2019ve argued for against God and me in your time.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere are very few all black,\u201d said Cadfael. \u201cDappled, perhaps, like this great rangy beast you choose to ride. Most of us have a few mottles about us. As well, maybe, it makes for a more tolerant judgement of the rest of God\u2019s creatures.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
