Cloister Witte is ex-military and currently a sheriff K9 deputy. Cloister lives for Bon, his dog.<\/p>\n

\u201cI buy you shit, Bon,\u201d he told her. \u201cGood shit, but you\u2019d rather run around with some thrift-store reject ball? People talk.\u201d <\/p>\n

She grinned at him, her tongue hanging out behind the ball until he laughed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Clositer I adore.<\/p>\n

Javi?<\/p>\n

Less so.<\/p>\n

Sometimes Javi was such a prick it was hard to share his head with himself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The only positive is at least he knows he’s a jackass.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t have the personality to get away with not being pretty.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I paid a bit more attention this time, to see if I could catch the mystery a little better second time around–some of it yes, some of it no. What was clear was the amount of damage parents can do to their children, wittingly or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cCloister.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u201d Javi asked. \u201cI thought that was a nickname because you were religious. I didn\u2019t know your mother hated you.\u201d <\/p>\n

Cloister did a rolling stop at the exit. There weren\u2019t enough people on the road to merit a full stop. Sometimes being a cop made you worryingly blas\u00e9 about traffic laws. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was her maiden name,\u201d he said. \u201cShe didn\u2019t hate me till later.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It allows Witte to offset the fact that although he looks like a dumb brute, he has a good idea what is going on inside the heads of the kids they have to deal with. <\/p>\n

What I have a hard time understanding is why Witte as anything to do with Javi (besides his looks). I suppose it’s his belief that he isn’t deserving, but that makes it really difficult to read.<\/p>\n
