But a near-death experience convinces her she needs to change things up: so she makes a list.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExcuse me, universe,\u201d she whispered to the kitchen floor. \u201cWhen you almost murdered me today\u2014 which was rather brutal, by the way, but I can respect that\u2014 were you trying to tell me something?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The universe, very enigmatically, did not respond.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first item she checks off her list is to move out of her family home, and it&#8217;s there she finds Red Morgan, supe of her flat, and the immediately&#8230; rub each other the wrong way.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chloe didn\u2019t do well around people like him; confident people, beautiful people, those who smiled easily and were liked by everyone and felt comfortable in their own skin. They reminded her of all the things she wasn\u2019t and all the loved ones who\u2019d left her behind.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But when Chloe decides to rescue a cat, they decide maybe they were wrong about each other.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou like to research everything,\u201d he guessed. \u201cNo; you like to know everything. You\u2019re one of those \u2018knowledge is power\u2019 people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowledge is power,\u201d she shot back. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet you were a massive teacher\u2019s pet at school.\u201d He was grinning. Hard. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet you were an aimless slacker,\u201d she said archly. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet you always file your taxes on time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She was clearly scandalized. \u201cWho doesn\u2019t file their taxes on time?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>What did I love about this story? Chloe&#8217;s family, for starters.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou sound,\u201d Gigi murmured, \u201cas though you are telling fibs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>How could she tell? She could always tell. It must be a grandmotherly superpower. \u201cWe\u2019ll talk about this later,\u201d Chloe squeaked. \u201cGot to dash love you bye!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWho does all this food prep?\u201d he asked, popping up from the fridge door with far too many boxes balanced in his arms&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEve.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rainbow girl? Really? She\u2019s \u00a0. \u00a0. \u00a0.\u201d He put the boxes down and waved his hand in a way that conveyed Eve\u2019s chaotic vibe perfectly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also, I loved that Red had supportive friends (even though he&#8217;d walked away from most of the people he knew when he was trying to make it as an artist).<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t love all the boinking, but that&#8217;s a given, really. <\/p>\n<p>The only other thing I took some issue with was the final Big Misunderstanding. Not that they had a Big Misunderstanding (after all, both had issues they need to deal with) but that Red was the one who had to make it up to Chloe. To me, it felt like they both had things to apologize for, and it felt any groveling should have been mutual, rather than one-sided.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s a pretty small part considering how quickly I tore through the book.<\/p>\n<p>Also: This cover.
