The jar had badly bruised her left hand and cut her arm as it shattered. But far worse, she had lost the child who would have been born a few months hence. She had bled much during and after the accident, particularly when she lost the child, and her strength had been slow in returning.

Because although she is back on her feet, Lucie is still struggling.

Lucie did not wish to be reminded of all she had to be thankful for. It made her troubled state harder to forgive in herself, which pulled her down yet further.

There is a lot happening here. Lucie is recovering from her fall, Wykeham is being blamed for the death of Sir Ranulf and also believes that Lancaster wishes him dead, one of Wykeham’s properties burns down, a woman is found dead, and a man is terrible burned. And there are issues within each of those spheres are well.

That is a lot going on and to keep track of.

One of the things I do enjoy about this series is seeing how Michaelo has changed.

Michaelo sighed with impatience. “Will you see (Magda)?”

“She will have my head on a platter if I do not.”

Michaelo leaned close again and, reaching out his long, slender hands, paused. “Might I adjust your cap and surcoat, Your Grace?”

“Do you think she will be offended by my appearance?”

“You are the archbishop of York.
