Both tip the scales in the two-fifteen, two-thirty range and wear size twenty. We are even about the same age, with Zee at forty-two and I the elder at forty-five.

But when her friend Sophie London died, Odelia discovers that there is a lot she didn’t know about Sophie–and maybe there are things she has to learn about herself as well.

Although there are some lessons she already knew.

As soon as the check was paid, he had walked me to my car. When he asked for a goodnight kiss, I thought that maybe I was paranoid about his chilly behavior. When his kiss became passionate, I was sure that I had read his signals incorrectly. But after washing and waxing my tonsils with his tongue in the darkness of the parking lot, he shrank from any suggestion that we should get together again. After four decades, I knew the score. If I had offered him my body, he would have slept with me, as long as he did not have to be seen with me.

The mystery was interesting, and I liked that (for the most part) Odelia didn’t do anything incredibly stupid in her search for what had happened to her friend. When something was possibly dangerous, she took precautions. (Like making sure people knew where she was, who she was with, and when she was supposed to be home.)

I also liked that although Odelia was hurt that Sophie kept secrets from her, she tried to understand why she might have kept those secrets (and I think eventually did come to understand).

All-in-all it was an interesting book, and if the second book goes on sale (or I can find it at the library) I’ll read it.

Publisher: The Novel RV
Rating: 7/10

Too Big to Miss (2006) Sue Ann Jaffarian (An Odelia Grey Mystery) Odelia Grey. is middle-aged, plus-sized, and single.
