Because if the dead could reach out through \u2018the veil\u2019 and speak to us, why would they not have done so before? Why would they have so little of value to say or do?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Except that Justin ends up pulled into the events of the first book.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStill\u2026 you sure about this, Clem? It\u2019s raising the stakes more than somewhat.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s what we ought to do,\u201d Clem said. \u201cThis all seemed\u2026\u201d He waved a hand. \u201cNot real people, before. But children, fourteen, running away from home\u2014 it isn\u2019t right, the way my family does things, and I\u2019m sick of it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this book the mystery unfolds a little more, and we discover more about what might have driven someone to murder&#8211;even if we still don&#8217;t know why.<\/p>\n<p>This is an enemies to lovers stories, which isn&#8217;t the best for me, since I don&#8217;t really grok boinking without liking someone.<\/p>\n<p>What makes the story work for me is how much (despite his denials) Justin cares for the girls in his care.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo,\u201d she said. \u201cThat went well.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Justin glared at his tumbler. \u201cI don\u2019t think I played him right.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSomeone,\u201d Sukey remarked airily, \u201csomeone once told me that the two things a medium\u2019s got to do is, always be the one in charge, and never let \u2019em know it. Pity you don\u2019t listen when you talk.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s said between the lines that Justin was abused by the man who had picked him up off the streets, so the fact he is determined to care for Sukey and Emma shows us everything we need to know about his character.<\/p>\n<p>Though I still wish there was more Clem in this story.<\/p>\n<p>Publisher: Loveswept<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rating: 8\/10<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Unnatural Vice (2017) K.J.
