The Wolf at Bay<\/a><\/em> (2018) Charlie Adhara<\/a> (Big Bad Wolf)<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>Cooper and Oliver are trying to figure out their partnership–both at work and on a more personal level. Cooper doesn’t want to admit he has feelings for Oliver, because that means he’ll be hurt if\/when Oliver leaves.<\/p>\n

We all know how well that works.<\/p>\n

When he realizes he has forgotten about his brother’s engagement party, he takes Park with him. Except that Cooper isn’t out to his family, and the werewolves aren’t out to anyone.<\/p>\n

This book has one of my favorite opening scenes–I absolutely adore his conversation with the nosy older woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know his favorite flower.\u201d She sucked her teeth mock disapprovingly. \u201cI\u2019m not sure he even has one,\u201d Cooper added defensively. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about birthday?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSomething that goes with the gift you got him because you better not just be walking in with some lousy flowers. So which is it?\u201d <\/p>\n

Cooper laughed. \u201cWhat if I want to get him some flowers just because?\u201d <\/p>\n

She raised an eyebrow and sniffed. \u201cUh-huh, right. You-fucked-up-flowers it is, then.\u201d
\n…
\n“What kind of flowers for just because?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThat depends on just because what. Just because you love him?\u201d <\/p>\n

Cooper coughed. \u201cOh, well. Let\u2019s not get crazy. What are my other options?\u201d <\/p>\n

She snorted. \u201cLike that, is it? You sound like my second husband, Gary. He couldn\u2019t handle looking like he cared either. A man like that gives daisies. Dead by the end of the work week. Don\u2019t be a daisy man, friend.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you said you\u2019ve been married for thirty-two years.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I was. Just not to the same man or for consecutive sentences.\u201d She cackled.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That passage is hilarious, but also tells you everything you need to know about Cooper and the state of his relationship with Oliver.<\/p>\n

When Cooper spends time with his family, you see precisely just how screwed up his relationship is–but also you get to see Park call him on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with calling?\u201d Park said. \u201cBesides, you\u2019d probably get along better if he knew what you did. Or some version of it, anyway.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIf he can\u2019t be proud of every part of me, he doesn\u2019t get to know the rest,\u201d Cooper hissed. \u201cI\u2019m not some kind of fucking pick\u2019n\u2019mix bag.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t even know you were in the hospital.\u201d Park\u2019s voice was raised now, his eyes dilating and possibly glowing gold, though through the haze of Cooper\u2019s frustration with his father, everything seemed brighter. \u201cYou almost died, Cooper.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, and? You think if he\u2019d seen me tubed up in some hospital that would fix us?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Also, this passage is like a punch to the gut.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Cooper blurted. His heart was beating hard, but fuck it, what were they here for if not this? <\/p>\n

Park looked at him. He had that same odd look on his face he\u2019d had when they first got to Jagger Valley that looked so much like nerves, but a little hopeful, too. \u201cFor what?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cEverything. Well, for earlier, and for being, you know, me.\u201d Cooper laughed awkwardly. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the hell, Dayton,\u201d Park said, sounding angry. \u201cThat\u2019s a horrible thing to say.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mind you, the mystery is also excellent here. But I really love watching Cooper unpack and deal with his shit.<\/p>\n
