After testing and noting down her blood sugar, Lizzie undressed and took her insulin. She’d had a discreet word with the hotel manager yesterday afternoon; now her little fridge held \u00a0 a variety of small sandwiches, their crusts daintily removed. Lizzie set a timer, and when her fifteen minutes was up, she devoured seven of those ridiculous little sandwiches without pause.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Did you tell anyone about this? Did you tell Mother?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be ridiculous.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWho, then?\u201d She was quiet. <\/p>\n

\u201cWell. No-one, really.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Lizzie.\u201d He sighed, and the depth of sadness she heard in that single exhalation brought her guilt rushing back. But without the added weight of such a huge secret, it was a lot easier to bear. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she said again. \u201cI should\u2019ve told you. But I didn\u2019t want to\u2014 you know, to get in the way of what you\u2019re doing.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cGet in the way?\u201d he repeated, incredulous. \u201cLizzie. You\u2019re my sister. I could be saving the planet from fucking aliens and it wouldn\u2019t matter. As soon as you need me, that\u2019s my priority. It\u2019s not like I\u2019m out here splitting the fucking atom.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

People deserve apologies. We don\u2019t deserve forgiveness. It’s not an exchange.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cCome on, Liz. You know you can tell me anything.\u201d <\/p>\n

She looked up, meeting his eyes. \u201cAnd you can tell me anything. Do you know that?\u201d \u00a0 <\/p>\n

He stared at her for a moment too long. The colour leached from his skin, leaving behind an ashy pallor, and she saw his jaw clench.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
