Better Than People<\/a><\/em> (2020) Roan Parrish<\/a> (Garnet Run)<\/p>\n

\"Better<\/a>One of the things that resonated so strongly with me was the misery of being laid up after a bad break that requires you to stay off your feet.<\/p>\n

Every day had dilated to a month, every night to a year, and Jack found himself wishing for anything\u2014 anything\u2014 to break the monotony of lying on the couch all day long and in bed all night.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But I also loved both characters. Jack for his fear and withdrawl after his betrayal, and Simon for doing everything he could despite his limitations.<\/p>\n

Simon didn\u2019t like this side of himself. The side that saw others\u2019 struggles\u2014 and how simply they could sometimes overcome them\u2014 and raged. Wished he could trade places.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But also that he gets angry–deservedly angry.<\/p>\n

Shame boiled into anger… <\/p>\n

\u201cI do!\u201d Simon yelled. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t walk when you had a b-broken leg. No matter how hard you t-t-tried, you couldn\u2019t because it was fucking b-broken. Now it\u2019s healed but I\u2019m n-not. I won\u2019t. I can\u2019t do these things!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But also how painfully true so much of the story is.<\/p>\n

“I think Simon sees how much you wish you could snap your fingers and make things better for him. But when you want that, what you\u2019re wishing is that he was a different person. One he\u2019s never gonna be. And that probably feels like shit.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yet for all that, it’s a lovely and uplifting story.<\/p>\n
