\"Grilled<\/a>This is such a fun book. I mean, supernatural food inspector!<\/p>\n

Keith could have epitomized the word \u201caverage.\u201d Not good-looking or bad looking. Brown hair and eyes. Nothing beyond that to report. He was the kind of man nobody noticed for very long. And that worked out well for him when he was on an investigation, but was a constant source of mild unease for him the rest of the time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After a cursory investigation, Keith had determined that the mermaid flesh was really manatee\u2014also illegal, but not his department\u2014and passed the case along to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There are so many things in these stories I just adore.<\/p>\n

\u201cMass media doesn\u2019t cover actual vampire deaths,\u201d Keith remarked before he realized how callous his statement sounded. <\/p>\n

\u201cHave you seen a vampire movie?\u201d DuPree demanded. \u201cThey\u2019re horribly violent. Full of wooden stakes and decapitations.\u201d DuPree choked on his last words. A sob escaped him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I mean, really!<\/p>\n

On the first page of the notebook she\u2019d made a special note that Gunther, like all goblins, was sensitive to salt and could only abide the smallest amount on special occasions. Then she\u2019d drawn a little, anatomically correct heart.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And side-eye to a disturbing children’s book.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, the story where the mother secretly cuts off parts of her body to feed to her starving husband and children?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never heard of that\u2014ever. I\u2019m completely sure I would remember if I had ever heard that story,\u201d Keith said. \u201cIt must be a goblin thing. Is it set on a craggy, snowy mountaintop under a blood-red sky?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is, but . . . are you sure you don\u2019t know that story? There\u2019s a children\u2019s picture book and everything,\u201d Gunther said. <\/p>\n

Keith just shook his head, partially to answer Gunther\u2019s question and partially at the idea that he would have ever come across such a book. Though now that he thought of it, it did sort of resemble the plot of The Giving Tree<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
