Lady Margolotta of Uberwald sent him five dollars a month to do it. The Dowager Duchess of Quirm also sent him five dollars. So did King Verence of Lancre, and a few other Ramtop notables. So did the Seriph of Al-Khali, although in this case the payment was half a cartload of figs, twice a year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When a group of dwarfs bring a printing press to town, everything changes.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that struck me when rereading this story, is how timeless Terry Pratchett&#8217;s observations are.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He knew about <em>concerned citizens<\/em>. Wherever they were, they all spoke the same private language, where \u201ctraditional values\u201d meant \u201chang someone.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>William wondered why he always disliked people who said \u201cno offense meant.\u201d Maybe it was because they found it easier to say \u201cno offense meant\u201d than actually to refrain from giving offense.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Character assassination. What a wonderful idea. Ordinary assassination only works once, but this one works every day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Apparently he wants a return to the values and traditions that made the city great, sir.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know what those values and traditions were?\u201d said Vimes, aghast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2018 Man Stolen by Demons,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThis refers to Mr. Ronnie \u2018Trust Me\u2019 Begholder, known to owe Chrysoprase the troll more than two thousand dollars, last seen buying a very fast horse?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do the demons fit in?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, he could\u2019ve been stolen by demons,\u201d said Dibbler. \u201cIt could happen to anybody.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you mean, then, is that there is no evidence that he wasn\u2019t stolen by demons?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat way people can make up their own minds,\u201d said Dibbler. \u201cThat\u2019s what Mr. Carney says.
