London Falling<\/a><\/em> (2012) Paul Cornell<\/a> (Shadow Police)<\/p>\n

\"London<\/a>Me, to myself. “I haven’t read the Shadow Police series in awhile”. Also me, “It’s really dark.” “I know it’s dark! I read it and listened to it!” “Are you sure you’re up for that right now?” (stomps off in a huff to read London Falling<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

Oh. Yeah. It’s really really<\/em> dark. Content Warnings for child harm, child murder (mostly off the page), kidnapping, parental murder, scenes of hell. Lots of bad things.<\/p>\n

It’s also a stunning book that I highly recommend. <\/p>\n

Costain and Sefton are UCs on a long operation that is being ended. Tonight.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think I\u2019ve gone native?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you don\u2019t catch me out like that, sunshine. I wouldn\u2019t dream of using such ill-considered language to a gentleman of West Indian extraction \u2026 who\u2019d be on to Professional Standards like a shot.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Quill has been running Operation Goodfella who doesn’t trust at least one of his UCs, and just wants to nail Rob Toshack(the head of the gang they are after) to the wall.<\/p>\n

Quill knew one old lag who\u2019d been successfully cautioned with \u201cGet in the fucking van, you\u2019re nicked,\u201d but that one had heard the full standard caution on forty-three previous occasions, and was thus claimed to have got the idea by now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lisa Ross has spent her entire adulthood focused on one goal: to take down her uncle, Rob Toshack.<\/p>\n

Ross had been told her appearance could put the fear of God into people at the best of times. Her right eye was blue, but her left one was gray, and her nose was askew.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Unwillingly, the four are made into a team, and try to unravel just what is going on with Toshack’s organizaion.<\/p>\n

“Footballers who score hat-tricks against West Ham do not always die in suspicious circumstances, but\u2014\u201d <\/p>\n

She clicked to the next image, which showed a series of graphs. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2014 they often do. More often, statistically, than they should.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is levity in the story.<\/p>\n

It was actually an unprofessional level of secrecy; even international terrorists paid their council-tax bills.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI saw a lot \u2026 of fuckwittery concerning myself,\u201d said Quill, \u201cabout which I feel like suing someone. Pity, then, that it was all true.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But it’s dark humor. Police humor.<\/p>\n

\u201cMight as well look as if we\u2019re together,\u201d said Sefton, under his breath, as he pressed the tea bag against the side of his cup to try and force out a bit of flavor. \u201cSeeing we\u2019re the only black guys in here.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe New Age,\u201d agreed Costain, \u201cdoes not recruit in line with best practice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s dark. It’s really dark. But it’s also am amazing story where you never expect what’s coming.<\/p>\n
