Making judgement calls, some of them at a moment\u2019s notice.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Dead and Buried&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rebus nodded and turned to MacManus, whose face had a sickly grey tinge to it. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Your first time?\u2019 Rebus asked. The constable nodded slowly. \u2018Never mind,\u2019 Rebus continued. \u2018You never get used to it anyway.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Playback&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rebus hated the Army\u2013 with good reason. He had seen the soldier\u2019s lot from the inside and it had left him with a resentment so huge that to call it a \u2018chip on the shoulder\u2019 was to do it an injustice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The Dean Curse&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Most often, a person\u2013 a person in authority\u2013 would read that name from the piece of paper they were holding and then look up at Frank, not quite in disbelief, but certainly wondering how he\u2019d come so low. <\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t tell them that he was climbing higher all the time. That he preferred to live out of doors. That his face was weather-beaten, not dirty. That a plastic bag was a convenient place to keep his possessions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Being Frank&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A faith should be just that, Rebus reasoned. And if you held belief, what need had you of miracles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing Things&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That was from Exodus. A dangerous book, the Bible. It could be made to say anything, its meaning in the mind of the beholder.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Auld Lang Syne&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The elderly woman stood up. \u2018Sir, are you from Scotland Yard?\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Rebus shook his head. \u2018Scotland Yard\u2019s in London.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>She was still standing. \u2018Now why is that?\u2019 she asked.
