\"Midnight<\/a>I’ve finished listened to the Jane Yellowrock and Faith Hunter series, with the exception of the two most recent books I haven’t read, so realizing I had a new Rivers of London book to listen to, I decided to restart the Peter Grant books.<\/p>\n

I adore Peter.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what am I?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cToo easily distracted.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI am not.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNew Year\u2019s Eve, Trafalgar Square, big crowd, bunch of total wankers pissing in the fountain\u2014 remember that?\u201d asked Leslie. \u201cWheels come off, wankers get stroppy and what were you doing?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI was only gone for a couple of seconds,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou were checking what was written on the lion\u2019s bum,\u201d said Leslie. \u201cI was wrestling a couple of drunken chavs and you were doing historical research.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want to know what was on the lion\u2019s bum?\u201d I asked. <\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d said Leslie. \u201cI don\u2019t want to know what was written on the lion\u2019s bum, or how siphoning works or why one side of Floral Street is a hundred years older than the other side.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t think any of that\u2019s interesting?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That is a perfect summation of Peter. <\/p>\n

And then there’s the world building.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you overdo it, there are consequences,\u201d said Nightingale. <\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t like the sound of that at all. \u201cWhat kind of consequences?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cStrokes, brain hemorrhages, aneurysms \u2026\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you know when you\u2019ve overdone it?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have a stroke, brain hemorrhage, aneurysm \u2026\u201d said Nightingale.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But best of all is how Peter looks at the world.<\/p>\n

A mob will tear an individual to pieces and a man with a gun and a noble cause is happy to kill ever so many women and children, but risking a fair fight\u2014 not so easy. That\u2019s why you see those pissed young men doing the dance of \u201cdon\u2019t hold me back\u201d while desperately hoping someone likes them enough to hold them back.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All of which is marvelous, but on top of that, is Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s narration. He is hands-down my favorite narrator ever.<\/p>\n

Seriously<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s marvelous.<\/p>\n
