Honestly, I’m not even sure what it is about this story, but it keeps catching at my mind.<\/p>\n

Part of it is how awful the women in the town are.<\/p>\n

Scott nodded, so weirdly nervous that his voice trembled. \u201cIt makes them want to read more. Maybe even books like that one, someday.\u201d He gestured to the table. \u201cI\u2019ll wait for the movie, though.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cCan you watch it while working out?\u201d Ren\u00e9e snapped at him, but with her attention on her phone. She might have been talking to Ross, or the rest of the knitters, for all Scott knew. <\/p>\n

Cole was so serious. \u201cDon\u2019t firefighters have to attend classes? Go to college?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh.\u201d Scott reached up to rub the back of his neck and play with his hat. \u201cTextbooks are different. I need to know that stuff. That\u2019s nothing.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Cole is delightful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m more interested in someone\u2019s excitement over something they have just discovered, than someone\u2019s smug, pompous insistence that there is a right and a wrong way to learn to love something.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But the others are good–especially Scott’s sister.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou dumbface.\u201d Angie snorted like a furious but soft-hearted bull. \u201cAre you telling me you think he could do better? Did he tell you that?\u201d Scott shook his head before steam came out of her ears. She was still pretty pissed though. \u201cHoly shit, I am going to fucking murder your exes.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not really exes,\u201d Scott pointed out, because she couldn\u2019t blame them for not acting like boyfriends when they hadn\u2019t been boyfriends. <\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I know. Hence this problem.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s not belabored, but the reason why Scott’s sister is a single mother is important–both to the story and as a reminder to those of us not in the military, of the toll of war.<\/p>\n

He wondered if Cole knew that Bobby\u2019s dad wasn\u2019t with them because of his mental health issues from his service in Afghanistan, and that\u2019s why he\u2019d recommended that particular series.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Also, the guys at the firehouse are ridiculous.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway,\u201d Scott added, quietly, \u201cyou seemed like you had other stuff going on.\u201d <\/p>\n

Someone behind the door whispered, \u201cOh, snap.\u201d Scott had a feeling it was Tiny. He briefly wondered if he was wrong, if the entire firehouse had gossiped about him and Cole, but had deliberately kept it to themselves. That seemed like a lot to ask of anyone, especially gossipy straight men.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But mostly I just adore Scott.<\/p>\n

He picked up Becks to give nervous, overprotective Bobby a break from watching over her all the time, before taking Bobby\u2019s hand for the walk home.

\nBut Scott didn\u2019t get any more time to think about it, because Becks wanted a snack, and Bobby had seen a lizard by the baseball field today, and both of those things deserved his full attention.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
