Murder Is Announced<\/a><\/em> (1950) Agatha Christie<\/a> (Miss Marple)<\/p>\n

A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6: 30 p.m. Friends please accept this, the only intimation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is post WWII story, and there are so many bits regarding that I love.<\/p>\n

“You know the Fuel Office won\u2019t even let us have the little bit that\u2019s due to us each week\u2014 not unless we can say definitely that we haven\u2019t got any other means of cooking.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI suppose there was once heaps of coke and coal for everybody?\u201d said Julia with the interest of one hearing about an unknown country. <\/p>\n

\u201cYes, and cheap, too.\u201d \u201cAnd anyone could go and buy as much as they wanted, without filling in anything, and there wasn\u2019t any shortage? There was lots of it there?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAll kinds and qualities\u2014 and not all stones and slates like what we get nowadays.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt must have been a wonderful world,\u201d said Julia, with awe in her voice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

An\u2019 that sort of thing wouldn\u2019t \u2019ave \u2019appened afore the war.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The more things change….<\/p>\n

\u201cI suppose you\u2019ve been talking to Phillipa Haymes?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted her account as an eyewitness.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou couldn\u2019t have waited until one o\u2019clock, I suppose? After all, it would be fairer to question her in her time, rather than in mine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Anybody who took the trouble could have a suitable identity card\u2014 and partly because of that, the subtler links that had held together English social rural life had fallen apart. In a town nobody expected to know his neighbour.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Also: queer rep!<\/p>\n

Nobody offered Miss Hinchcliffe sympathy or mentioned Miss Murgatroyd\u2019s death. The ravaged face of the tall vigorous woman told its own tale, and would have made any expression of sympathy an impertinence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
