He and Jerry had argued once, in their way, about the difference between Lincoln working for his dream and doing what he loved, and why Jerry might be tired at the end of each day. Mostly, Lincoln had gotten loud, Jerry had gotten quiet, then said, \u201cI love them. They\u2019re my family,\u201d and Lincoln had given in except for the occasional mumbling.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The words in those books weren\u2019t always meant for him, but they were something for him to have.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cAw.\u201d Lincoln smiled in sympathy, in a more playful mood than he had been a second ago. \u201cYou poor thing. But it was bound to happen sooner or later. Kids grow up. Next thing you know, you\u2019ll be driving her to college and she\u2019ll be\u2014 oh no! Jerry, don\u2019t panic. It\u2019s okay. Please don\u2019t make that face.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat face?\u201d Jerry felt a little frozen. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jerry studied her short, half-dyed curls and her flushed cheeks. \u201cYou\u2019re going to be a part of everything, Sof. That\u2019s wonderful. That\u2019s so wonderful. And you trusted us enough to tell us. That makes me very happy. Like we did something right with you.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Jerry,\u201d Susanna whispered. \u201cI just stopped crying.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWhen you told me you\u2019d never dated, I thought a lot of things. Probably a lot of wrong things. But now\u2014\u201d he paused long enough to make Jerry tense \u201c\u2014 were you trying to tell me you have literally no experience at interpreting romantic signals for yourself?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
