\"London<\/a>Pretty much all the trigger warnings for this book: child death, child harm, gore, violence, serial killer..<\/p>\n

This series is so dark, and yet its darkness doesn’t bother me, possibly because it’s almost over the top.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what you get when you Google \u2018West Ham\u2019 now? Serial killer, serial killer, serial killer \u2026 oh, look, there\u2019s also some news about your FA Cup run, there on the third page.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s also incredibly blunt.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d been out, sort of, at his last nick. A few of the lads had asked, so he\u2019d told them. And then his DI, Pete Grieves, had, too, over a pint\u2014 deliberately nothing official. \u201cI should think you qualify us for some sort of grant, lad, representing two minorities for the price of one,\u201d he\u2019d said. Sefton had laughed along, only realizing later how the conversation had left him feeling \u2026 he still didn\u2019t know how<\/em> he felt about it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And extremely weird.<\/p>\n

Costain grabbed a sack from the floor and flung the cat inside. Then he tied the opening in a knot. Inside the bag, the cat hissed and spun around. \u201cWe have an accomplice in custody,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell that to a judge,\u201d muttered Quill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWhat are you intended for?\u201d asked Quill. \u201cSpying for her? Warning her?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot at all. I was made to agree with her. The head on the stairs is for warning her.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDid she make that too?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, yes, obviously.\u201d And now Quill felt patronized by a cat.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
