Oh, yes, somebody said that there was a look\u2014 a special look that he gave anyone\u2014 and then very shortly afterwards that person would be taken ill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Until he reads she was killed almost immediately after getting off the train car they shared.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity sends Luke to Wychwood, where he poses as the cousin of a local woman to see if there might be any truth that the spate of deaths were, in fact, murders.<\/p>\n<p>This book was published in 1939, which gives us bits like this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She wore no hat, and there was no net on her hair.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although this isn&#8217;t a Miss Marple story, there are always the little bits I adore.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAh,\u201d said Mrs. Pierce. \u201cI\u2019m never one to gossip.\u201d This was unexpected but promising. <\/p>\n<p>Luke pricked up his ears and waited.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though my favorites are the ones that could easily be heard today.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s always cheering,\u201d said Luke, \u201cto hear someone speak well of the marriage state. Especially in these days of easy divorce.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPah!\u201d said the major. \u201cYoung people make me sick. No stamina\u2014 no endurance. They can\u2019t stand anything. No fortitude!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>I do think nowadays there is so much waste\u2014 and nobody saves or thinks of the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>PLUS we get the forerunner of the McMansion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYes, they tried to put it over on me here! Carry out the original spirit of the building. No, I said, I\u2019m going to live in the place, and I want something to show for my money!
