He and Jerry had argued once, in their way, about the difference between Lincoln working for his dream and doing what he loved, and why Jerry might be tired at the end of each day. Mostly, Lincoln had gotten loud, Jerry had gotten quiet, then said, \u201cI love them. They\u2019re my family,\u201d and Lincoln had given in except for the occasional mumbling.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cAw.\u201d Lincoln smiled in sympathy, in a more playful mood than he had been a second ago. \u201cYou poor thing. But it was bound to happen sooner or later. Kids grow up. Next thing you know, you\u2019ll be driving her to college and she\u2019ll be\u2014 oh no! Jerry, don\u2019t panic. It\u2019s okay. Please don\u2019t make that face.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat face?\u201d Jerry felt a little frozen. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was kidding.\u201d Lincoln leaned closer and spoke soothingly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Susanna burst into the room and Sofia swung toward her. \u201cMom\u2014\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, thank God,\u201d Susanna exclaimed immediately. \u201cI thought someone was injured and bleeding out on the kitchen floor, but it\u2019s only my daughter with short hair. Think of the money I\u2019ll save on shampoo!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hoping someone would know so he wouldn\u2019t have to say it was a feeling he was intimately familiar with.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWhen you told me you\u2019d never dated, I thought a lot of things. Probably a lot of wrong things.
