Phillip sucked in a breath. \u201cI have no intention of harming my children.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I\u2019m certain you don\u2019t. You\u2019d likely call it discipline. But I\u2019m not interested in semantics. I won\u2019t leave your children alone with someone who seems determined to make enemies of them. They\u2019ve had precious few allies these past few years.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Alice said from the sofa where she was propped up on a flotilla of cushions. Every week there seemed to be less Alice and more cushion, and Ben briefly wondered how long until there wasn\u2019t any Alice at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Neat categories of valid relationships that everyone understood, phrases of belonging that could be etched concisely onto tombstones: beloved son, devoted wife.
