Thomas has convinced himself that he is being clever. He (he and Ripley, the coachman, to be exact) will drive to London and back, enjoying himself thoroughly the while. In his view, the mere matter of transporting a number of small children and their nurse adds nothing to the complexity of this endeavor. To you and you alone, Cecy, I must say ha! Ha! With minimal gesticulation yet unmistakable authority, scarcely murmuring a word aloud, Thomas cast what even I could recognize as a spell masterly in its restrained power. Silence followed for a split second, and then a series of clicks sounded, like a thousand crickets gone mad. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe tumblers of every lock and the latch on every door in the place,\u201d Thomas replied. \u201cIt\u2019s all open now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Georgy snatched the Gazette from me and hurled it across the room. That is, she tried. As I have often observed from Thomas\u2019s attempts to do the same, newspapers do not hurl well.
