\"Widening<\/a>I’ve been borrowing these from the library, and the book before this one was checked out, so I jumped ahead.<\/p>\n

I mean, I’ve already read the series multiple times.<\/p>\n

Spenser is starting to unravel.<\/p>\n

I sipped another small swallow of whiskey. The whiskey added a little charge to the silence. Irish whiskey was in fact excellent for thinking about things like silence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Susan is in DC and Spenser is alone, so he takes a job guarding a congressman to pass the time.<\/p>\n

A congressman whose politics made him unelectable in 1983 but can be found all over now.<\/p>\n

Spenser has a few small rules to keep him from completely unwinding, but it’s obvious to those who know him that he is in trouble.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince when have you been drinking hard booze?\u201d Paul said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s come to seem soothing lately.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Additionally, Spenser is far more gray in this book than he had been in earlier books. He has a goal, and isn’t particularly delicate about how he achieves that goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn orgy?\u201d <\/p>\n

I nodded. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a date with a sixteen-year-old girl to go watch an orgy?\u201d <\/p>\n

I nodded again. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you got the date how?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cBy impersonating a police officer,\u201d I said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He might not be the bad guy in this, but he isn’t a good guy either.<\/p>\n
