\"Swordheart\"<\/a>I’d been playing this as background for a couple of months–not especially paying attention, but wanting voices talking.<\/p>\n

Then I finished Michael Prichard’s narration of the Spenser series (I absolutely cannot stand listening to David Duke’s narration) and while floundering trying to figure out what to listen to next, decided to start this, so I could keep on with the cleaning project I was doing. <\/p>\n

I quickly became engaged.<\/p>\n

Halla has inherited from her great-uncle, and her great-uncle’s family is extremely unhappy about this.<\/p>\n

So they lock her in her room to force her to marry cousin Alver.<\/p>\n

Which is how she meets Sarkis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the servant of the sword,\u201d he said. \u201cI obey the will of the\u2014great god, woman, put on some clothes!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I adore Halla.<\/p>\n

Sarkis grunted. \u201cAt any rate,\u201d he said, \u201cif anyone asks, I trust you\u2019ll simply do that thing you do.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat thing?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know.\u201d He waved his hand irritably. \u201cBegin asking unexpected questions until everyone in the conversation starts doubting their senses. It\u2019s a talent. Like some strange form of diplomacy that goes so far in the wrong direction that it comes out the other side.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The story is delightfully funny, when you’re not expecting it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d she admitted, looking at the pile of potatoes, \u201cyou\u2019re good at that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI have a great deal of experience skinning my enemies,\u201d he said, deadpan. <\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have many enemies among the potatoes?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot any longer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The woman in front of them looked over her shoulder and said \u201cYou can go ahead of me.\u201d <\/p>\n

Halla blinked. <\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSir\u2026ma\u2019am\u2026I\u2019m here because my youngest needs to get out of the house and learn a trade. You two appear to be either enchanted or desperately insane. And in either case, I\u2019d rather you weren\u2019t standing behind me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I ended up enjoying it so much I started listening to The Clockwork Boys<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Which I have not yet read.<\/p>\n

(There is still a lot of cleaning and organizing to do.)<\/p>\n
