Dr. Walid chuckled and Dr. Vaughan sighed. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, my guess would be that somebody sliced open her brain, pricked it with narrow bore needles and then reassembled the brain\u2014seamlessly mind you\u2014and then popped it back in her head with her none the wiser.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThat seems an unlikely scenario,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt does, doesn\u2019t it,\u201d said Dr. Vaughan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSir,\u201d I said, because Stephanopoulos wanted me to encourage him but not too much. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s hard, Peter,\u201d she\u2019d said. \u201cBut if you could contain your erudition and ready wit for just a little while we\u2019d be most grateful.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAm I allowed to be cheeky?\u201d I\u2019d asked. <\/p>\n
