Vivian enjoys her new job at the Nightingale–and even more enjoys making deliveries for the dress shop instead of sewing. But when Bea’s uncle, who had just started working at the Nightingale as a bouncer, is found dead and the death ruled a suicide, Vivian is again drawn into investigating.<\/p>\n

As with the previous book, I liked how she worked details and elements of NYC in the roaring 20s into the story.<\/p>\n

Those who couldn\u2019t afford it had to leave their loved ones\u2019 bodies with the coroner\u2019s office, destined for a mass grave on Hart Island, where the unknown and unclaimed of the city\u2019s morgues were sent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHe probably thinks the police actually help people.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThey do,\u201d Vivian said, an edge of bitter humor to her words. \u201cJust not people like us.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But doesn’t let those details make the story too dark.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, you\u2019ve got that look in your eye like you\u2019re all jittery and mixed up inside. And I know you like to dance when you\u2019re feeling like that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And I really do appreciate the details of that time.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure it\u2019ll be safe for us there?\u201d Vivian asked as they climbed into the cab. <\/p>\n

She was taken aback when Danny gave her a sour look, all his normal playfulness gone. \u201cWhy, are you scared of all the Chinese folks?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I just meant\u2026\u201d Vivian could feel her face heating. \u201cWe\u2019ll stand out, is all. Two Irish girls in that part of the city are bound to attract some attention, aren\u2019t we? And that\u2019s the last thing we need right now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The mystery was a good one, and I didn’t expect the places it zigged and zagged.<\/p>\n
