\"A<\/a>I still find it odd how a story that is perfectly adequate but nothing special can work so well as a comfort read.<\/p>\n

Possibly it’s just the sheer decency of the two main characters.<\/p>\n

Like any parish, Lindenshaw had its share of people who would prefer it if there were no women priests, the only prayer book used was the one published in 1662, and everyone lived by the parts of the Levitican law that didn\u2019t apply to them but stopped everyone else having fun.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What would his colleagues say if they saw him having an earnest conversation with a dog? The children wouldn\u2019t bat an eyelid, naturally. They\u2019d understand such things were important.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
