Gideon Haverston has returned home from war with both physical scars and mental ones.<\/p>\n

Gideon shifted his weight to his good leg, pivoted, knocked the barrel of the rifle away with one hand, and threw his other out in a fist.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Gideon had made one promise and one promise only. Never again would he be responsible for the well-being of another person.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Freddy and Lilly have spent twelve years struggling to survive on the remote estate to which they were sent after Freddy became the ward of Lord Haverston. <\/p>\n

\u201cI love you, Lilly Ilestone.\u201d She planted a kiss on her cheek. \u201cI\u2019m sorry I was so rotten at breakfast.\u201d Lilly returned the kiss. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m sorry I maneuvered you so unfairly into something you don\u2019t want.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSorry enough to\u2014?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot nearly.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They are not inclined to believe Gideon when he arrives claiming he and his brother want to make amends foe the actions of their father and step-mother, but they gradually accept their circumstances have changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course she\u2019s ill,\u201d Lilly said pleasantly. \u201cYou sent those custard-filled pastries.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWas something wrong with them?\u201d Bloody hell, he\u2019d poisoned the woman. \u201cCan a person get sick from eating a stale pastry?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Lilly assured him. \u201cBut a person can get sick from eating six fresh ones.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Both are also going to have a season, no matter how little Freddie wants one.<\/p>\n

This is a comfort read, one of my favorites.<\/p>\n
