That part I got. <\/p>\n<p>But there were no clues as to when the story itself was set, and I hadn&#8217;t realized when I started reading it was an older book. <\/p>\n<p>There weren&#8217;t cell phones, and no one watched TV, but beyond that?<\/p>\n<p>By page 17 I was confused.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018Fortunately, we\u2019re protected from the worst excesses by the fact that all Governments long go outlawed absinthe. Pernod isn\u2019t nearly so dangerous.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bramwell Barbour was the creator of that sprightly multi-ethnic husband-and-wife detecting team, Adam MacAdam, the American-Scottish mulatto and his beautiful French-Eurasian wife, Suzie Chong. In keeping with the spirit of certain lifestyles prevalent in this last quarter of the Twentieth Century, the MacAdams maintained a marriage so open a juggernaut lorry could have been driven through it without touching either partner.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That didn&#8217;t help at all.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Almost all cases were equipped with wheels, now that porters had become a vanishing breed, and anyone who had lacked enough foresight to travel without a wheeled case deserved to struggle.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And that wasn&#8217;t much better.<\/p>\n<p>But it was apparently too much trouble to check the copyright, so I just kept on being confused.<\/p>\n<p>Which is fine, because the characters were also confused.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018See here, Sir Cedric, you mustn\u2019t let him upset you like this.\u2019 Dix was earnestly trying to pour oil on the troubled waters. \u2018Lots of the youngsters are going around saying things like that these days. They don\u2019t mean it. Why, when the war breaks out\u2014I mean, if war comes, they\u2019ll be the first ones to join up and fight. You\u2019ll see.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018You keep babbling about Ceylon,\u2019 Eric complained. \u2018What\u2019s happened to Sri Lanka?\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sri Lanka hasn\u2019t happened yet,\u2019 Midge threw back over her shoulder. \u2018This is 1935.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There were fun bits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018Thank God they can\u2019t get at me.\u2019 Cedric shuddered. \u2018Lettie can remember all those ins-and-outs. Comes of having a trained mind.
