It was balm for my bruised pride to hear him apologize, but it did not change what had happened. The hurt did not miraculously vanish, nor did the discomfort his presence caused me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I knew what was coming, like following a script written specifically for us. And yet every time I hoped this <\/em>time would be different.<\/p>\n

This<\/em> time he would really mean what he said.This time he would give up his brandy. <\/p>\n

So when he failed and I stumbled upon him defiantly swigging from a flask or passed out in his chair, an empty bottle at his feet, it was doubly painful.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Why could he not stop? If not for himself, then at least for me. I knew how much he loved Mother. I knew how much it devastated him when she died, and then to lose Erik so soon after. But what about me? Was I of so little account? After all, I had lost them, too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Exhaustion had a way of amplifying things better left unexamined.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
