Isaac had to find the school\u2019s heart, its beating, living heart. He didn\u2019t really understand it, but magic was like that, and it was always tied to life. The job, in theory, was simple: find the heart, destroy it, and get out before the Guardians caught him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Except that to find the heart, he has to become part of the school, a student, a classmate, maybe even a friend.<\/p>\n

To learn about the worlds he has only briefly visited.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince we\u2019re reviewing the basics, what is the most important consideration in planar travel?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cResonance,\u201d Daffodil said. <\/p>\n

\u201cExactly, and what does that mean?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not supposed to eat the food,\u201d Isaac said. <\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Frost, but do you understand why?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot at all.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And perhaps to learn the world is different from what The Old Man had taught them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going to make me?\u201d Lin had told him to come here. She hadn\u2019t sounded like he had a choice. <\/p>\n

\u201cOf course not. Therapy only works if you engage with the process. If I force a reunion, I could traumatize you. We\u2019re here for the opposite of that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is a fair amount of darkness in this story, as we learn Isaac’s past and the pasts of his classmates, but there is levity hidden here and there.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, can anyone tell me what occurred in the Christmas War of 1984?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that the one where people were beating each other up over dolls?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot exactly, though you have the correct time period.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I like David Slayton’s stories and writing, and that they are queer without having to be romances or boinking books.<\/p>\n
