I believe I read the author had health issues that kept him from finishing the book on the schedule he set for himself, and I also think he was fighting with the publisher of his earlier books, which may also have been distracting.<\/p>\n

Opening with caveats probably gives you an idea of how I feel about this book. It’s the final book in the series, so I wanted it to be strong and perfect, but…. it wasn’t.<\/p>\n

I could see\/feel some of the struggles he had in writing, which is understandable. I wish he’d taken a little more time with the editing, both to tighten up some of the sections of the book, and find all the copy-editing issues. <\/p>\n

Of which there were multiple.<\/p>\n

That out of the way, as far as the story, I was happy with how things went. We got to see Fred’s full story arc, and how he had changed and grown over the course of the series. I also liked the vampire mythos they came up with here, and why Fred’s power was what it was. <\/p>\n

Those explanations fit well with how Fred has acted throughout the series, and how he has worked to collect allies and friends rather than amass power.<\/p>\n

Being the final book in the series, we got multiple glimpses into the lives of the members of Fred’s clan–and his friends. I’m not certain I quite got the bits about Sally–those seemed new to the story line, and I wasn’t quite sure how that would change Gideon’s relationship to Sally. <\/p>\n

But it was satisfying. <\/p>\n
