Mischief Night, or Gate Night as some folks called it, was an annual tradition throughout the woodlands.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She jumped in surprise but then realized it was only a spider dangling from a silken thread. The spider must have come inside during the day, looking for a warmer place to set up shop. \u201cOh, excuse me, I didn\u2019t see you there,\u201d Vera said to the spider.<\/p>\n

Vera\u2019s mother had been very firm about manners. Always greet a spider when you see one, she had said. We may not speak the same language, but courtesy is understood by all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
