It was a nightly ritual for them. Mrs. Meldrin would have her glass of warm milk, Mr. Meldrin his brandy and the two of them would sit before the fire and share a few quiet moments alone, discussing the events of the day.<\/p>\n

Patience sometimes left her door open at night, just to hear the murmurs of their conversation. She couldn\u2019t make out the words, but her purpose was not to eavesdrop, it was merely to hear the sound.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t be serious.\u201d He gave her a pitying look. \u201cA dinner party in two days?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI shall keep it small, no more than a dozen guests.\u201d She tapped her chin again. \u201cMaybe two dozen.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYour staff must abhor you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a beautiful woman, Patience.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI. . .\u201d Flustered, she attempted to make light of the compliment. \u201cWithout my spectacles, you mean.\u201d <\/p>\n
