First and foremost because of Guy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Philip\u2019s candle had only been a stub. It guttered now, and went out in a soft sigh, and he stood in the darkness, listening to a sick woman moaning, while her brother wept because he loved her.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I suppose I look a fright,\u201d she added regretfully. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look wonderful.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t talk nonsense.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look wonderful,\u201d Guy repeated. \u201cBecause you aren\u2019t feverish and you aren\u2019t lying there barely breathing and I\u2019m not afraid of\u2014of\u2014 Don\u2019t do that again, Manda, please.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But also because of Amanda.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOh, nonsense,\u201d Amanda said, far too airily. \u201cHe won\u2019t read it, and if you go around belonging to a hellfire club called \u2018the Murder\u2019 and having orgies, you can\u2019t complain if people wonder about you. And my publisher assured me they would protect my anonymity. And it\u2019s not even meant to be him anyway.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you say all that in court, put the last part first.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And also because of the Murder.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And then there were men all round him, the short round-faced one yelping with glee, Mr. Raven shaking his hand, Lord Corvin enthusiastically proclaiming Dr. Martelo\u2019s virtues\u2014in fact the lot of them rejoicing at Amanda\u2019s deliverance with as much honest pleasure as though they weren\u2019t a notorious hellfire club at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And also because people listen to each other.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd what would happen if you decided you no longer wanted a little country innocent?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Philip bit back his first response.
